Backpacking Trips in the Adirondacks
The Northville-Placid Trail (NPT) is one of the premiere long trails in the Northeast. The trail is approximately 135 miles and traverses the heart of the Adirondacks
from the village of Northville in Fulton County in the south to the village of Lake Placid in Essex County in the north. Along the way it passes through or near the
communities of Piseco, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake and Long Lake. Conditions along the trail vary greatly. One must be prepared for mud, trail relocation
(permanent and temporary), bridges out, beaver activity, miserable weather, biting insects, missing trail markers, and overgrown trails. The trail passes through
what many consider the wildest and most remote parts of the Adirondack Park, notably the high plateau that encompasses the Spruce, West Canada, and Cedar lakes area,
along with that of the Cold River. The highest point the NPT reaches (3008 ft) is at the crest of the ridge to the E of Blue Mt. and of Tirrell Pond.
We have broken the NPT trail into 4 sections based on vehicular accessibility for hiker shuttle and food/gear drops. Our NPT section breakdown does not include walking
on any roads. Most sections described below can be done at a leisurely pace in 4 days by stronger hikers and backpackers capable of carrying 30-35 lbs. for 9-10 miles daily.
Adjoining sections may be combined for longer treks. We will gladly accommodate guided trip requests for the NPT as we are able. Lightweight backpacks, personal cook systems,
camping gear (excluding sleeping bag) and meals can be provided if desired. Let us know what you would like and we will take care of the details INCLUDING SHUTTLE SERVICE.
We encourage reservations 3+ months in advance. To inquire about the possibility of scheduling a NPT trip, please submit a Plan A Trip form.
Please note that we limit group size to 4 people per trip due to camping regulations and campsite availability along the trail.

Long Lake --> Lake Placid
We begin this section of trail from the parking area off Tarbell Rd. and finish at the Averyville Rd. trailhead in Lake Placid. The trip length is approx.
36 miles through a remote, rugged and scenic wilderness area. We plan this as a 4 day trip averaging 8-9 miles daily expecting the possibility of a 12 mile day, depending
on campsite availability along the Cold River.
Wakely Dam area --> Long Lake
This is the shortest section of trail beginning east of Wakely Dam and finishing at the trailhead off Rt. 28N near Long Lake. The trip length is approx. 25 miles. We
generally plan this as a 3 day trek.
Piseco --> Wakely Dam area
This section of trail begins near the Cold Brook bridge off Haskell Rd. in Piseco and finishes 0.8 mile west of Wakely Dam on the Moose River Recreation Area (MRRA) Main Rd.
The trip length is approx. 30 miles and meanders through a scenic wilderness area with a rich history in logging, woods sports and Adirondack hermits. The West Canada and Cedar
Lakes are some of the most remote and beautiful mountain lakes in the Adirondacks. We plan 4 days for this section with daily distances between 6.5-9.5 miles allowing time to
enjoy whatever we find of interest along the way.
Northville --> Piseco
For this section of trail we generally figure 4 days beginning at the parking area off Collins-Gifford Valley Rd. (3.5 miles from Northville). This section of the NPT traverses
two newly re-routed trail sections, finishing at NY 8 near Piseco. The trip distance is approx. 36 miles.
